Time is flying!

On March 25 I had an appearance at the 2011 Buffalo Motorama which was held at the Buffalo Niagara Convention center as an employee of People, Inc.volunteering/Miss FL. We teamed up with Airport Plaza Jewelers who purchased a ton of chocolate for People, Inc. to sell through the Easter holiday. Last year, over $25,000 was donated to People, Inc (Western New York's leading human services agency), as television's most well-known jeweler, Don Hoffman, allowed the agency to transform his large "The Showroom" facility in the Airport Plaza into a chocolate store, selling delicious Fowler's Chocolate Easter candy. Hoffman donated his building, staff, and three weeks of advertising time towards the successful project. 100% of net proceeds went to People Inc. (Twenty-Five Thousand Dollars!). This year's fund-raiser promises to be bigger and better, especially with the half-hour show dedicated to promoting the sale and your generous support of it. Also, last night a new Miss Mohawk Valley 2011 was crowned! Unfortunately I was not able to attend due to being sick but I am very excited to welcome Lynn Tryon to the MNY 2011 family! See you next weekend girl! Congratulations to all of the contestants in this year's pageant on a job well done, everyone looked stunning in the pictures I've seen!

Catch Up

It has been one thing after another for me the past couple of weeks, but I have finally caught a break and am so excited to share some updates! So here we go....

March 13: Miss Greater Rochester Pageant
I was thrilled to be able to attend the Miss GR pageant both because I was a contestant in the past and because this was my very first time being able to sit back and watch a MAO pageant! I met the wonderful Miss Buffalo 2011, Desiree Wiley, who was a pleasure to chat with and share each of our experiences up to this point. Boy, were we in for a treat watching each of the amazing contestants compete in such a well put together event. Katie Martin, Miss GR 2010, was also a pleasure to watch and her story of her involvement in the MAO organization was truly inspirational... it gave me a lot of pride to be in the position that I am and taught me to take advantage of every opportunity that comes my way and to learn from it! As the announcement of the top 3 ladies was about to begin I watched with baited breath because I truly could not have singled out one contestant from the group to be the winner as they all did amazing. When Chelsea Prophet was crowned Miss Greater Rochester 2011 I was so happy for her and so excited to have another Buffalo Area sister join the MNY Class of 2011! Congratulations to Chelsea, all of the contestants in this year's pageant, and Katie for an amazing year.



March 20: Buffalo St Patrick's Day Parade

This year it was such an honor to ride in Buffalo's St. Patrick's Day parade which is the second largest St. Patrick's Day parade in the country! Accompanying me was the Buffalo Jills' Rookie of the Year, Gina Barbera. My brother, Tyler, was nice enough to drive us girls down the parade route (even though I think he had just as much fun as we did and was proud to show off his car more than his sister and Gina!)  It was amazing to see the thousands of people who came out to this event, their amazing reception and excitement when my float went by, and to experience  the general excitement that people in Buffalo have the ability to bring to any occasion.

March 23: Photo session with Shawn Connors

Good luck to all of the beautiful ladies competing for Miss Empire Rose / Miss Empire Star today! I wish I could be there to cheer you all on! Be you, show the judges what you are truly passionate about, put everything you have into your talent, and smile your biggest smile possible... and you're all bound to do great! Paradigm Shift

I am currently taking a Leadership & Motivation class this spring semester and so far it has proven to be very useful in both analyzing and improving upon my behavior in those two areas. We are reading the book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey and I absolutely suggest picking up a copy to anyone and everyone! Today in class we talked about paradigms, the way in which you perceive the world, and paradigm shifts. I found that one particular story in this chapter struck a chord for me... So, I wanted to share it!

"   Two battleships assigned to the training squadron had been at sea on maneuvers in heavy weather for several days. I was serving on the lead battleship and was on watch on the bridge as night fell. The visibility was poor with patchy fog, so the captain remained on the bridge keeping an eye on all activities.
  Shortly after dark, the lookout on the wing of the bridge reported, "Light, bearing on the starboard bow."
  "Is it stead or moving astern?" the captain called out.
   Lookout replied, "Stead, captain," which meant we were on a dangerous collision course with that ship.
   The captain then called to the signalman, "Signal that ship: We are on a collision course, advise to change course 20 degrees."
   Back came a signal, "Advisable for you to change course 20 degrees."
   The captain said, "Send, I'm a captain, change course 20 degrees."
   "I'm a seaman second class," came the reply. "You had better change course 20 degrees."
   By that time, the captain was furious. He spat out, "Send, I'm a battleship. Change course 20 degrees."
   Back came the flashing light, "I'm a lighthouse."
   We changed course."

The degree to which our mental maps accurately describe the territory does not alter its existence.

Today I read a few quotes that I found inspiring and thought I would share! What do these mean to you?

And so it begins....

Yesterday marked the first day of my year-long journey as Miss Finger Lakes 2011. I am still at a loss for words in describing how blessed, honored, and excited I am for this new chapter in my life. I have been competing in MAO locals since I was 17, and the 5 years it took to get here was certainly worth the wait because I don't think this opportunity could have been presented to me at a better time! I can't apply the motto "good things come to those who wait" to my situation, but rather I can say good things come to those who persevere. Also, this has confirmed my belief that everything happens for a reason because each experience up to this point will prove to have been in preparation for me to represent the Finger Lakes organization and region to the very best of my ability!

On that note, I have big shoes to fill based on all of the incredible things that my predesesor Amy Valenti, Miss Finger Lakes 2010, accomplished during her year of reign but also in trying to match her level of genuineness, personality, kindness, and inspiration. In other words, hopefully Amy doesn't mind sticking around the Miss Finger Lakes family a little bit longer to show me the way!

To all the contestants in this year's pageant: When I say I absolutely did not expect to win, it's because every single contestant shined last night. I was lucky to have met so many new girls and to have spent the day with so many of my friends from the past years of competing in this pageant. I learned something new from each and every one of you that I will take with me and apply to my year of reign as well as my next level of competition... so thank you all for that! Another HUGE thank you for nominating me as one of the Miss Congeniality winners! I hope you ladies were able to comb out the "tease bump-its" in your hair that I gave you!

And so it begins... my year as Miss Finger Lakes 2011. I couldnt be more ready and I definitely couldnt be more excited.
